A new bead show for the mid-west! GemStreet USA is now offering BeadStreet USA, the mid-west's premier bead show, in Columbus, OH, August 26 & 27. See the July 2006 issue of Lapidary Journal (page 84) for more details. You won't want to miss this one.

With summer hot on spring's heels, what could be cooler than pearls? Pearls are the hot, cool item for your wardrobe. Even if you have one strand (maybe from when you were married in the 1960s?) you will be surprised at the beautiful new colors Swarovski has to offer.

What is a Swarovski pearl, you ask?

aka Crystal Core Pearl, Lead Crystal Pearl

These "pearls" are absolutely faux and absolutely fabulous! Each bead has a genuine Swarovski crystal core and a synthetic pearly coating. Swarovski crystal pearls are the premium, top-grade imitation pearl. They are comparable to organic pearls in almost every way: shape, depth of luster, weight and even response to skin temperature. The Swarovski company's innovative coating technology applies the pearl finish in many layers, creating a glow that seems to radiate from within. The finished beads have a smooth, sensuous texture, a perfect shape and consistent color. The high specific gravity of crystal gives the bead an appropriately moderate weight.

The beads' perfect luster is entirely free of flaws, while most manufactured pearls are either too shiny, too matte or too flawed on the surface (such as fibers and bumps). Manufactured pearls also tend to be too lightweight and are prone to fading and chipping. Swarovski crystal pearls are resistant to wear, perspiration, sunlight, scratches, perfumes and washing. Bonus: Swarovski updates its wide variety of colors and shapes twice a year, giving designers constantly renewed inspiration.

This has been a very busy new year for us. We have a new granddaughter and a new home. Moving after 35 years in the same home is a disaster! Nothing goes the way you dream it will. Trying to move and continue to travel to shows is even harder. So, if you don't hear from us as fast as you would like, please understand that we are going through CAIOS!

That said, we have some new stock in our Bali line. We hope to get the pictures up within the next few weeks. We did have to raise our prices on new stock to $0.60/gram. Our old stock is still at $0.55/gram.

Don't miss our great prices on Swarovski Crystals! We are still able to hold our own, even though exchange rates keep rising and the price of the crystals has gone up.

Attention to our customers in Canada and upstate New York, we will be at the Hamburg NY fair grounds the first weekend in April. See you there!

Happy Beading!

Hello to all of you in cyber-space,

In this month’s newsletter we will be writing about:

  • Precious metals prices
  • Chinese glass beads
  • Swarovski pearls
  • Beads per inch
  • Items to make your project perfect

Precious metals prices:

Many of you may not be aware that the price of precious metals (Sterling Silver, Gold, Gold Filled, etc.) fluctuates every day. The price you pay is based on the day we purchase product. Lately, the prices of silver and gold have skyrocketed! Therefore, our quoted prices on the web site are based on existing stock. Please call our toll free number, 877.664.9335, to verify the current price on listed stock.

Chinese glass beads:

Bead-azzled has added many new styles of Chinese glass beads to our stock. These beads are limited to quantity on hand. So, if you see something you just can’t live without, don’t wait to order!

Swarovski pearls:

With June coming up, there will be lots of graduations and weddings. Be sure to see our beautiful selection of Swarovski pearl colors. Our strands of 100 - 4mm pearls sells for only $8.00 and the strands of 100 – 6mm pearls sells for only $11.00. These pearls are 100% man made. Each pearl has a Swarovski crystal bead as its nucleus; therefore, all holes are the same size as Swarovski crystal beads. These pearls can be strung on medium weight Soft Touch, Soft Flex, or knotted on number 4 Griffin silk or nylon thread.

Beads per inch:

EXAMPLE: Your necklace is to be 16” long. Subtract 1.5” for the knotting = 14.5”. Now subtract the length of the clasp and the clam shell end tips (these hide your connecting knot) 1.5” = 13”. So, 13” is the length of pearls you will use. According to my calculations you will need 83 - 4mm pearls for this project.  (See chart below.)

Items to make your project perfect:

You may also want to purchase one of our Bead Rulers, $4.95; Basics of Beading, $8.95; EZ Necklace, $9.95; and/or EZ Bracelet, $11.95. These items are one-time purchases that will help you make your project come out correctly every time.

Happy beading!
